Sumenep Regency Experiences Deflation in August 2025


Sumenep, (1/9) – Sumenep Regency once again recorded deflation in August 2025. The release by Statistics Indonesia (BPS) noted that on a month-to-month (M-to-M) basis, Sumenep Regency experienced deflation of 0.11 percent and recorded inflation of 1.71 percent during the 2025 period (Year to Date). Meanwhile, compared to the same period last year (Y-on-Y), Sumenep Regency actually experienced inflation of 2.69 percent.

“Sumenep Regency this month experienced a decline in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) from 111.71 in July 2025 to 111.59 in August 2025, or in other words, in August 2025 we experienced deflation of 0.11 percent on an M-to-M basis,” said the Head of BPS Sumenep Regency, Joko Santoso, in a press conference in Sumenep.

“As for the year-on-year basis (Y-on-Y), Sumenep Regency still recorded inflation of 2.69 percent, which is still within the upper limit of the inflation target set by the government and Bank Indonesia,” added Joko. From the expenditure group side, it was recorded that in August 2025, 7 expenditure groups experienced inflation and 2 expenditure groups recorded no change in CPI (stable). Only 2 expenditure groups experienced deflation, namely the Food, Beverages, and Tobacco group and the Transportation group.

The Food, Beverages, and Tobacco expenditure group experienced deflation of 0.43 percent, with a contribution to Sumenep Regency’s overall deflation of 0.15 percent. Meanwhile, the Transportation expenditure group experienced deflation of 0.06 percent with a contribution of 0.01 percent to overall deflation. On the other hand, the expenditure groups contributing the most to inflation in Sumenep Regency were the Health group, which recorded inflation of 0.45 percent with a contribution of 0.01 percent, and the Education group, which recorded inflation of 0.17 percent with a contribution of 0.01 percent.

“Based on the commodities contributing most to inflation and deflation, the deflation in August 2025 in Sumenep Regency was mainly driven by falling prices of Tomatoes (down by 60.29 percent), Bird’s Eye Chili (down by 45.29 percent), and Household Fuel (down by 5.47 percent). Meanwhile, the commodities contributing to inflation were Rice (which increased by 1.74 percent), Tap Water Tariff (which increased by 21.65 percent), and Fresh Shrimp (which rose by 10.73 percent),” explained Joko Santoso.
